Good and Bad Day..

I had a telephonic interview this(3.16.11) morning at 10 am from a NY based financial company. I was feeling so lazy to give the interview. But, once the interview started I gained my form and performed to the best of my ability. I suppose it was an easy interview. Or may be I have reached a stage where I am ready to clear first telephonic technical interview of any company. I did not prepare anything for this interview. I was not nervous at all. I watched DID doubles and played kinect for the whole day yesterday. I was not serious about the interview at all.

I felt as if the interviewer gave me a positive indication and so I was happy thereafter. But, right before the lunch time, I received an email from the company recruiter for which I was in Seattle and I was very disappointed to read it. I was not disheartened because they rejected me but because of some other reason. One of a special person in my life, had very high expectations from me and had expressed his/her immense happiness on me getting this job offer. But, I could not clear this interview. I had prepared really very hard for this interview. But, I failed. I was rejected. I am sorry *, I could not meet your expectations. May be I am not sound technically as you thought I was. Making you happy was my foremost motivation for this interview. But, I couldn't.

In addition to this, I was also very sad because one of my very close friends' got a rejection from his company for which he interviewed 1 and a half weeks ago. He was so excited about joining that company but it didn't work out well for him as well. I feel sorry for him. But, this is what we call life and we have to move on. I wish he gets a job very soon. I think we have toiled a lot throughout last 2 years of our masters and this is the time that we should be paid off with the results.. Of-course good results!

A day in Seattle

Today, when I am sitting at home in Seattle and watching DID since past last 4 hours, I remember the days of last Summer when I was here for 15 weeks of time. It was such a wonderful time back then. Every morning Me, Di, and Jiju went to the office together and came back together in the evening. We had a great time after coming from office, we shared the entire days' schedule.,and kept on talking talking and talking endlessly. The best part was the time of weekends. We went to so many places to visit like Snowqualmie falls, Levenworth, Mt Rainier, and different restaurants like Mehfil, Bamboo garden and many more.

In addition to this, I had a full gang of 30 desi interns with me to hang out. These people were among the amazing people I met in US. I am so happy that I have always been lucky to get good infact great people around me. Somehow, I feel I am among the (most) luckiest people on this earth. Seems like an exaggeration, but yes, I am amongst them.

Two years back, when I had come to US, I was feeling so low and felt like the world has come to an end for me and I dont have good people around me, felt as if I had no friends and as if I have lost whatever I had with me back in India.

But, here I am today, happy and satisfied with whatever past two years have given me. I feel as if I have grown from a small immature/indecisive/ignorant kid to a sensible person who can responsibly handle any kind of situation you put me into.

Since, last fews days I have been reading a few people's blogs and reading them always inspired me to write about myself, but I always thought I can never write though I have so much share. So, here it is, my first ever blog which has been possible only because of the people whose blogs I have been following. I feel writing about yourself is so much fun. I feel as if I can keep writing endlessly. I will try to keep blogging regularly.

Date: 24 Feb 2010 (Wednesday)
Time: 12 noon (MST)

I was IN position from 11:45am. It was very very difficult to pass even a single moment after I was in place, all set for the interview. I tried to do things exactly the same way as I did for my first interview. Kept water on my left and juice on my right as in first interview. Listened to song - Lakhsya toh har haal me pana hai 3-4 times (same as my first interview). Later I took out a black pen and pencil. Took out the same book as I used in my first interview. Later I realized that I am using black pen instead of blue which I had used in first interview. So got the same pen - blue pen. Kept YOU CAN WIN - by SHIV KHERA in front of my eyes. (To motivate myself in difficult times - though never got a chance to look at it :)) Kept resume and some bits and papers along my sides.

I was expecting a call at 12. But she called me a bit late. It was 12:10 and my phone rang. Oh my god..!!

She started - Hi Jaya I am --- (did not hear) from XYZ .. Were you expecting my call? I said Hi Deniz (I dont know if she was Deniz or some one else - I just knew that the name of my interviewer was Deniz so just said hi Deniz :) But, I think she was not Deniz.. I felt as if there was some Indian girl on the other side ..) yes I was expecting your call. She said something about her team - ordering team and few things about it and said - tell me something about a recent development project you have worked on?

Told something.... about one of my Online HTML editor project .. Mummbled a bit .. Started off badly (because she din give me much time to get comfortable with her) .. but covered it up later...

Deniz (supposed to be)- This sounds cool..

1. You have a website and are given a log file which contains a list of users who visited your website at a particular time on a particular day. i.e you are given a list of custumer id's , page id's and timestamps.

When I expalined her about O(n^2) she said can you do it in a better way?

Interview - 1

This story began when I received an email from X.com on 18th Jan 2010 to schedule an interview with them.
I provided them my availability for the interview and they scheduled me for an interview on 29th Jan 2010.

But on 27th Jan, I felt so nervous and felt that I was not prepared at all. So, I mailed them back asking to reschedule my interview to 5th Feb.

My recruiting coordinator was such a nice lady that she rescheduled my interview to 5th Feb.

Finally, I had a telephonic interview scheduled on 5th Feb 2010 at 1pm MST, I kept waiting until 1:30 pm but my phone did not ring. So, I emailed them asking if I would get a call for interview after that. But, she apologized me and said that they could not call me today for some reasons and so they will have to reschedule my interview. After, that she asked me my availability for rescheduling the interview.

Later, it was scheduled on 10th Feb 2010 Wed.

On the day of interview, I was very nervous as it was my first ever telephonic interview. Actually speaking, it was my first ever technical interview.

I was ready by 11:30 am. I occupied a peaceful, quite place at my home and was waiting for the call as I was waiting on 5th Feb :) But, this time I was sure that they would call.

Round 1
Date : 10 Feb 2010
Time: 12 noon MST
Day: Wednesday

1. Introduce yourself.
2. Why do you you want to work with XYZ?
3. You are given a set of log files which have some errors in it. How would you do it?
3a. You need to print the number of occurrences of word error not all the lines where "error" occurs.

-Which language are you comfortable in? I would like to ask you something about the language concepts: C++ / Java ?

4. Explain Virtual functions. (C++)
4a. Explain the difference between Class and Struct in C++.
5. Multiple Inheritance.
5a. Disadvantages of Multiple Inheritance.
6. Do you know about design patterns: Tell me what is Singleton design pattern.
7. Name the data structures (Tell me a list of data structures - array, linked list, trees, heaps, hashtable and then a long pause .. I felt as if he was expecting a few more but I did not speak anything I was not able to think any more data structures..:D)
8. Find the Non repeated chars (array of char)- Time space complexity
Array approach - Time O(n^2) Space O(1)//without considering the original array
Hash table approach - Time O(1) Space O(n)

-What if you know that the array contains only chars ---> Time O(1) and Space O(26)->O(1)
-What if the array contains only numbers? Would you like to change your best choice of data structure of hash table for the defined problem?

9. Find a cycle in the linked list and mail the code.
